THERESE MALTEN (1855 – 1930)

‘Therese Malten – Wagner’s Devoted Kundry’

Michael’s acclaimed book on aspects of the life and career of the great Wagnerian singer Therese Malten who, at the age of only 26 years of age, was invited by Richard Wagner to sing Kundry in the first performances of Parsifal at Bayreuth in 1882. She shared the role with two illustrious singers of the time - Marianne Brandt and Amelie Materna. In Therese Malten - Wagner’s Devoted Kundry private photographs, diary pages and postcards from the singer are published for the first time. Also included are Malten’s memories of Wagner’s rehearsals of Parsifal, reviews of her performances in Tristan und Isolde (opposite Jean de Rezske), Siegfried and Tannhäuser in St Petersburg in 1898 and reports of her final stage appearance and her years of retirement.

A unique peep into aspects of the life of a legendary singer much un-published material. Price £25.00 + p&p.

REVIEWS OF THERESE MALTEN WAGNER’S DEVOTED KUNDRY

‘An invaluable and fascinating collection. Congratulations on a splendid-looking book’

Barry Millington,
Wagner Journal

‘Wonderful little book… …Magnificently done… A wonderful labour of love.’

Robert Matthew Walker,
Musical Opinion

‘Michael Letchford’s collection of documents and photos – lavishly reproduced – is both frustrating and exhilarating. Admitting that his tiny volume is but a ‘footnote to an as-yet unwritten biography’ of Therese Malten, Letchford provides tantalizing glimpses into the era before gramophone recordings could capture the voice of one of the greatest early Wagnerian sopranos… Letchford’s mix of photos, letters, newspaper articles and reviews somehow comes together to form a colourful portrayal of Malten, both as singer and later as a private citizen. Letchford’s miniature treasure-trove should go far to keep the great singer’s memory alive.’

William Shackelford,
Opera

‘Mr Letchford deserves our gratitude for transforming Therese Malten from a mere name to a living, three dimensional person and artist in this excellent and most interesting volume. Most highly recommended.’

Mel Siegel,
The Record Collector

‘…it is her own personally written-down insights into the rehearsal process of the Parsifal premiere which are the most fascinating part of this treasurable little book… The rest of the book is a wonderful assemblage of memorabilia, some of it gushing, from unidentified friends and family... One day it will provide invaluable source-material for anyone who wishes to write a full biography of this lady who must have been an extraordinary singing actress.’

Christopher Morley,
Musical Opinion

‘Received Therese Malten yesterday, read it in one sitting, with enormous pleasure. The book is exquisitely produced. The mix of fascinating flotsam and jetsam with painstaking commentary coalesces into something like a Borges ficcion… has an allure and a mystery all its own.’
